“It’s time we relearn empathy with practical tools (in our own shoes), and eliminate the frustration of trying to feel what others are feeling and imagine something you have never experienced.”

-Jonelle Massey

The Miseducation of Empathy

(Found on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other platforms.)

In The Miseducation of Empathy, Jonelle Massey dismantles traditional ideas about how we should be practicing empathy in our daily lives. For too long, we’ve been taught to try and walk a mile in other people’s shoes – to try and imagine how others are feeling – but drawing from her professional and personal experience as a mom, a therapist, and a coach’s wife, Massey teaches us how to more deeply connect with others by uncovering the thoughts behind each other’s feelings and behaviors. Part memoir, part self-help, The Misdeucation of Empathy and the stories of Jonelle’s personal journey promises to change the way we see and connect with one another, in a time when we need it most.

Amazon Review

This book should legit be required reading in schools and for all adults. Jonelle’s life experiences mixed with her education/career/experience as a psychotherapist paints such a different view of empathy than I’ve ever heard and how we actually HAVE to stay in our own shoes. I’m learning so much and I know I’ll be re-reading this for years to come. She goes into the archetypes of empathy…and let me tell you… I probably need to slow my roll on being the “cheerleader” I can’t wait to start using these practices to be a better listener and friend.

“Jonelle Massey explains how our common acts of empathy are ‘misleading, self-serving, and outdated,’ and often result in disrespect and disconnection with each other… Bravo, Jonelle. This book couldn’t be any more relevant, unique, and needed! Thank you!”
